I grew-up a Lakers fan. For me most of my experience with enjoying my team came through the radio. You’d try and tune the radio just right depending on where you were in California to hear the classic game call of Chick Hearn and his transition of analysts from Keith Erickson to Stu Lantz. As I got older I began to be able to watch some Lakers games on television. In the late 80’s & early 90’s about half of the Laker road games were broadcast on KCAL channel 9. Before that the only Laker games that I was able to watch were the 3 or 4 a year that NBC broadcast on the Sunday National Game, oh & of course the championships since the Lakers were in the championship 9 out of 12 years in 80’s & early 90’s. But to move-up to about 20 games a year was fantastic.
Jump forward to 2012 at the beginning of this Lakers basketball season fans were up in arms, some were in hysterics. Why? Because there was limited access to Lakers games on television (until just yesterday). You see over the past two decades Lakers fans had been able to enjoy every single game that was played by their beloved professional basketball team on television–the limited coverage days of my childhood were gone and people now had total access. So when this year started and that accesss due to television contracts had changed people didn’t know what to do. They screamed, “it’s not fair” “this is not right” “We deserve better than this.”
Newspaper headlines read:
“Deadlock brings confusion”
“New Lakers Media Deal Holding People Hostage”
“Limits on TV Coverage Have Fans Upset”
Radio was still available, but how dare anyone suggest that the Lakers fans settle for radio!
Lakers fans had decided what they liked and if that is not what they were given they would act irrationally!
They felt ENTITLED to full access & if they couldn’t have it they were going to pout, grump, & raise a ruckus cause that is what entitlement causes!
So what does this have to do with worship?
Well there was a time in history in which you could enter most Protestant churches and worship would be very similar. There may be a difference in teachings here and there but for the most part worship looked the same and sounded the same and felt the same. I grew-up going to churches and for the most part this is how I saw worship, no matter where a person went in my faith practice worship was the same.
Which is why when I was a 4th grader and the new church Celebration Center burst on the scene it blew everyone’s mind! Some in a good way and some in a bad way.
The music was upbeat, with drums, and electric guitars, there was drama, and powerful altar calls. There was standing room only and sometimes we stood for 20 minutes or more just singing. No more was there just a single hymn then sit down, then stand-up to greet your neighbor, then another hymn though you could sit for that hymn. This was all new, but it was really the only place around in the Adventist faith community that was doing worship like this.
Jump forward to 2012 there is now a lot of different styles of worship within Prostestantism, even within Adventism. More and more church goers have experienced and tasted different varieties of worship. And for the most part we all have defined what type of worship we like and what type we don’t like.
And whereas before we were simply satisfied to be worshiping the God of the universe, now many having experienced something else have decided that worshiping the God of the universe in any context is no longer good enough.
You see many folk have decided that if the pastor preaches something they don’t like, or if the music isn’t what they want, or the length of the service is too long, or too short, there aren’t enough prayers, there are too many prayers, the pastor uses powerpoint, he/she doesn’t use powerpoint, (the list could go on and on…) then they’ll pout, grump, & raise a ruckus. Why? Because no longer is worship just about worship.
Worship has become about what we expect it to be–which is Entitlement Worship–when folk feel they have the right to define what worship is and isn’t. What should be preached and what shouldn’t. Whether a service should be long or short. What instruments are sacred & which are secular.
And for some (which is too many) “worshipers” if any one of these things is not what they expect it to be, like entitled Lakers fans, they act irrationally.
Because that is what entitlement does it moves us away from rational thinking to self-centered thinking which is always irrational!
Now in sports this may not be the biggest deal–isn’t all sports fandom in some way self-centered in the long run anyway.
But in worship, the entitled worshiper may just find that they have the exact worship they want, but in the process they’ve stopped worshiping the God of the Universe and have instead established themselves as the “g”od of their worship.
Be careful before you define a worship or leave a worship simply because you don’t like it.
It may just be that is the very place God can keep your worship more about Him & less about you!
No matter how much you may or may not like it!
While many in North America want to be just like us when it comes to our Educational system, a large percentage of Adventists are abandoning our schools.
Why?
Because of a perceived reality that just isn’t true!
That our schools are less than the best…
Ellen G. White wrote,
““Something better” is the watchword of education, the law of all true living. Whatever Christ asks us to renounce, He offers in its stead something better.” –Education, p. 296.
Adventist Education is that something better! Don’t believe me how ’bout we look at the data? What about what others are saying?
What about this headline taken straight out of the pages of the Los Angeles Times,
Or what about the fact that Martin Doblmeier a non-Adventist award winning producer and director is making a documentary for PBS, (tentatively titled: “Teach the Children Well”) examining the success of Adventist Education.
In a clip I saw of this video there is even a line addressing the fact our own people are not attending our schools, “with all of this proven success, Adventist schools are still shrinking.”
So why is everyone else other than “US” (Adventists) impressed with our schools?
Because of the following data:
A 4 year study was done on Adventist Education. In this study 800+ schools in the United States, Canada, & Bermuda were studied. 51,706 students participated in the study.
And the findings show something amazing!
Our students were ABOVE the National Average in:
ABOVE predicted/expected achievement:
That last line in all red is one of the things that shocked researchers most. Unlike most studies that throw-out the lowest end, those that may qualify as special-ed students. These studies included every single student that attended Adventist schools and found that even our students that were considered special-ed/needs students scored on average above predicted/expected achievement.
Specifically researchers looked at the Sciences as that is considered to be weaker in Adventist schools for two reasons:
So what were the results?
There were differences in the sciences found between the smaller Adventist schools which constitutes more than 60% of our schools (and when they are speaking of smaller they are talking about schools in the elementary level even smaller than Sierra View Junior Academy about 90 students K-8 & comparable to Armona Union Academy for High-School level).
We would expect differences in these areas though–the larger schools were better–wait…what STUNNED researchers:
In every category the differences were consistently in favor of the smaller schools.
In fact the amazing thing about Adventist Education that adds an entirely different level of separation between our school system and every other:
“Students in schools with fewer financial resources do as well as those with more financial resources.”
Think about all the talk in the public arena about the schools that have and those that have not? And the unfair advantage that is available to kids in schools with great financial resources.
In the study of Adventist Ed, there is no distinction. Even our 1 room classrooms with absolutely no science labs, still on average score above the national average in science and all other subjects on national standardized tests.
And the last little detail I want to share with you that has been found in studies addresses a fundamental desire that is in most parents hearts, to see their child have greater opportunities than they themselves had:
It has been found that a child that works their way through our Adventist Educational System will likely advance to a higher socio-economic level than their parents.
The way it was stated is this:
Adventist Education is the only known system by which it is highly-probable that an individual will advance to a higher socio-economic status in ONE GENERATION.
Why?
Because the watchword for Adventist Education is “Something Better.”
This is why PBS is having a documentary made & the Los Angeles Times is doing stories on our educational system. They want to know and understand why.
And maybe we as Adventists, should pause, and take a second look as well.
But here to me is ultimately why we should take a second look at Adventist Education:
“In the highest sense the work of education and the work of redemption are one…” –Ellen G. White, Education, p.30
Our church is in a crisis. More than half of our young people are leaving the church and saying, “No” to the Adventist life and beliefs. This can be thwarted but part of the change comes with connecting to an Adventist school.
You see the Valugenesis study found three key elements to a childs spiritual development. Spirituality and Adventist values taught at home, a quality local church, & attending a quality Adventist school.
Now some people may say, “you see I don’t need the school there is only a 6% difference between the two quality venues and the three quality venues.”
Well, let me just say I hope no one would say that. Let us hope that every parent would say, “even for just a 6% greater opportunity of faith, I would do anything for my child!”
These are the numbers but here is the testimony of more than 81% of students that attended Adventist schools:
“Attending an Adventist school is the most important thing that has helped me develop my religious faith.”
That is the testimony of my life. I accepted Jesus through the influence of my Academy Bible teacher, Pastor Neil Richmund & my Academy peers. I am forever grateful to Spring Valley Academy for the impact that wonderful school had on my life. And more so I am grateful that my parents made the decision from day one that there was no other option for our family, all three of their kids were going to Adventist school whether we liked it or not our entire lives. The schools weren’t perfect and nor were we, my older sister and I went the way of the world for a time, but we had our roots and we are both back walking with the Lord. She teaching in an Adventist Elementary school, and me working as an Adventist pastor. And my little sister praise the Lord never wandered and she recently had the great privilege of enrolling the next generation into an Adventist school, Armona Union Academy.
If you haven’t considered it or you have decided Adventist Education just wasn’t worth it for your family; Will you pause and see past the perception to the reality?

Appreciated Pastor Dwight Nelson joining us today for our episode of Faster Pastor. I really resonated with much that my three other colleagues shared. I wish we could have recorded what happened after the video went off! Besides David teasing Albert for being Uncle Sam and telling folk to “Go Vote!” it was a lively discussion of four pastors that are acutely aware of the times we are living in and a desire above all else to see Jesus’ love shared with this nation, a flawed nation, but a nation we still all desperately love! Dwight had a beautiful prayer for all of us, that should be prayed over every single believer in this country–“no matter what happens Tuesday, keep us faithful to Jesus!”
All about running!
In November of 1844 William Miller, the leader of the Millerite Movement & the man that predicted that Jesus would return on October 22, 1844 wrote these words,
“Brethren, hold fast; let no man take your crown. I have fixed my mind upon another time, and here I mean to stand until God gives me more light. And that is, Today, Today, & Today, until He comes and I see Him for whom my soul yearns.”
Today as I attended the funeral of a young lady whom today would have turned 34 had she not died in her sleep two weeks ago without warning, I was reminded why I as a believer in the 2nd Coming of Jesus should hope for and even live in expectation of His return TODAY.
You see if Jesus had come TODAY, Carla’s parents & brother, her exended family, and friends would not be going to sleep tonight in sorrow. If Jesus had come TODAY all the tears shed in that little A-framed church would have been wiped away, if only Jesus had come TODAY.
For those living close to the heart of Jesus there should be so much in this world that daily reminds us why we are disappointed that Jesus has not returned TODAY!
Every argument with our spouse…
Every moment of temptation we succumb to…
Every cross word spoken to our children…
Every political debate we watch…
Every distant war we try to ignore…
Every explicit billboard we pass…
Every innocent victim mourned by her mother….
should cause at least a modicum of disappointment that TODAY a cloud the size of a man’s fist has not appeared in the eastern sky.
This world is not our home and so TODAY we will hold fast to hope, letting no man take our crowns.
We will live in expectation TODAY & EVERY DAY until He comes and we see Him whom our souls yearn, and on that day, our disappointment will be no more!
Even so, come, Lord Jesus, come TODAY!
It seems from this video that the female pastors see themselves a lot differently than the administration of the church explains them to be, “Ordained simply to meet government policy.” They see themselves as Adventist leaders with a mission! Southern Adventist University recently announced an increase in enrollment for the 14th straight year. In a time when everyone else seems to regularly struggle for students, why has Southern grown? The following are a few of my thoughts that I wrote in the comments section on another blog, but decided to share them with y’all on here. These thoughts are not scientific and I did not write this as a blog, but rather as a response to another blog so forgive some of the errors and the style with which it is written.

Malcolm Gladwell in his book “Tipping Point” speaks of how a series of happenings can “tip” something into a great movement. How often times it is not just one thing, but a series of events, sometimes seemingly unrelated that cause a movement. I believe that is what happened at Southern.
When I arrived at Southern in 1998 it was one of the most cost efficient schools. While I paid around $14,000 for tuition, books, room & board. My sister at Pacific Union College was paying $20,000 just for tuition.Also my first year at Southern they began to partner with Oakwood College (now university) in a program known as DEEP. 8 African American students from Oakwood attended Southern and 8 Caucasian students from Southern attended Oakwood. My first couple years at Southern there were very few African American students, the DEEP students were recognizable, but within a couple years that program was no longer necessary because the amount of African American & Caribbean Black students at Southern increased rapidly. Southern had already been a fairly mixed population with White kids and Latin kids from Florida, but this added a level of diversity that the school greatly needed considering its segregated history. Yet the great paradox to the fact that “Southern was growing through diversity” was that Southern was also growing as a result of “White Flight.” During the early years of the turn of the century a number of students from Andrews University and Columbia Union College were transferring to Southern, primarily white students. As I got to know many of these students and as I discussed with folk from both CUC & AU in later years many of these individuals were leaving their schools to go to a more “white” school. So Southern grew both from intentionally recruiting from amongst the minority populations & from folk trying to get away from schools that were becoming less & less “white.”
Another example of contradictory reasons for growth. Was in the fact that Southern grew based on both it’s conservative traditionalism and it’s progressive elements. Southern is famous for their mandatory vespers, worships, & most of all the requirement to be out of the dorm on Sabbath mornings by 10 a.m. to attend church (all things I still defend vehemently!) They are known for a stricter dress code & jewelry policy than many of our other schools adhere to. When I first arrived at Southern the policy was still in place that you could not wear hats or shorts to the library or cafeteria. They eased up my second year, hats were allowed in both and shorts were allowed during the dinner hours. Pants still had to be worn at lunch. And yes I saw this policy enforced.And yet for as strict as Southern was in those areas there was also a very progressive element to Southern. A couple years after I started attending Southern, they opened up Southern Village. This as small as it may seem placed a great deal of trust in students. Southern Village were resident halls set-up like apartments with 4 to 6 students living in them. Here is why it placed so much trust in the students. There was no dean that lived on site, the students were on the honor system when it came to having the opposite sex in your room (guys apartments were next to girls apartments), they were on the honor system regarding curfew, and having residence hall worship. For a school that many saw as being controlling dictators this contradicted that perspective, it placed trust and value in the students.
Southern also while being very “strict” and “conservative” was simultaneously touting their School of Visual Art & Design where we were told you could get internships with Disney, Pixar, & other mainstream media outlets–not aspects I’m thrilled with–but it was another aspect of what was helping the school to grow.
While Southern promoted and maintained strong ties to classical & traditional worship through our music department & our Evensong Sabbath evening worship services they also were very supportive of those musical styles which might have ruffled the feathers of many of the traditional backers of Southern. For example: It will probably never be listed as one of the reasons for momentum and growth at Southern, I still to this day believe it to be so. From January 2000 through May of 2000 Southern Adventist University sponsored the tour of a Christian Rock Band, Catch 77. Catch 77 played at 25 different Academies across the United States, 5 colleges, and several churches. They personally sold several thousand CD’s, but also everywhere they went they touted how great Southern was! They would pull into a school teach Bible classes for a couple days, have a Theology student traveling with them preach a couple nights, and then on the last evening they would have a full blown concert, lights, drums, effects, all the things that made academy faculty uncomfortable:). Upon their return to Southern in subsequent years, the band members would regularly have students approach them on campus at Southern and talk about how they had seen them & how they had chosen Southern because of their visit to their school. It completely went against the clean cut, traditional image of Southern, & yet Southern helped to make it happen! And in turn I believe Catch 77 helped Southern to gain momentum in those early years.
There of course are many other things that have helped Southern to grow. The high standard of excellence. From the expectations placed on the students, the quality programming, the visual look of all the buildings on campus, it all adds to the appeal of Southern.We could talk about the strong academics I believe at one point they had 10 straight years where every nursing student in the program passed the boards on their first attempt (that streak actually might still be going). The Theology Department continues to have the highest percentage of graduates receive a call and sponsorship to the seminary.
I believe it was also about having the right people in the right place at the right time. Southern has a president, Dr. Bietz, that receives standing ovations from the student body, he is seen as a visionary and his leadership is trusted by faculty, alumni, parents, and students. He in part has the ability to be who he is because he has an amazing team around him. Dr. Wohlers a strict disciplinarian that helps to maintain the high-standard at Southern, he asks the hard questions, and will speak-up when he sees things getting a little out of hand. As much flack as he often got, he I believe helped allow others to take some of the chances they did! There is Marty Hamilton that is a long range planning genius. He has overseen the purchase of property all around campus. Placing Southern in a great financial and long range growth position. He has overseen the construction of many of the new facilities on campus that add to the beauty and fit in with the vision and look of Southern. Our Campus Ministries department continues to lead the colleges in sending student missionaries overseas & providing absolutely tremendous Spiritual Life programming on campus. The list could go on and on!
But above all I think what has helped Southern to continue to grow is that they have maintained a commitment to the fundamental beliefs of the Seventh-day Adventist church. They are not perfect, but they don’t try and see how far outside of Adventism they can get. They don’t try to downplay who they are as Adventists. They don’t compromise on who they hire as faculty and staff. They are committed to being a Seventh-day Adventist institution of higher learning and I believe because they have honored the Lord in that way, the Lord has honored them! As long as they keep that as their first and primary objective, not for the sake of growth, but b/c they truly want to honor our Lord & Savior Jesus Christ, I believe they will continue to grow.Well I never thought it would be so, but Los Banos will always have a special place in my heart! It is a place I’ve passed through many times with not much thought, other than this is a good place to go to the bathroom 🙂 But September 17, 2012 it became the birthplace of my third son (no name at this time).
We had gone to Gilroy Gardens for my oldest son Dayton’s 4th birthday. Dayton’s birthday is actually October 2nd, but since Christina’s due date was October 6th we decided to do a family birthday outing early. And a great family day we had!!! My parents, Christina’s parents, of course our boys, and one of our nieces, enjoyed a nice full day.
Then as we were heading over Pacheco Pass from Gilroy back towards the 99 & home Christina informed me, “my contractions are 4 minutes apart.” She then began to search on her iphone and said, “the hospital in Los Banos has a birthing center.”
And so 1 day shy of three weeks early on September 17 @ 1:22 in the morning our third beautiful boy was born and Los Banos is forever a blessed place!
(I noticed they have a population of over 35,000 people here and just one Adventist church of 200. Maybe we’ll have to help plant a church here someday as a thank you! :))
Our boy weighed in at 7 lb he measures 21 inches. The lightest and the tallest of our boys at birth.
He was quick to eat and quick to pee, all good signs.
We don’t have a name yet, after all we were supposed to have another three weeks.
But whatever his name becomes we know that:
“Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord,
The fruit of the womb is a reward.
Like arrows in the hand of a warrior,
So are the sons of one’s youth.
Happy is the man who has his quiver full of them;” –Psalm 127:3-5a
Please pray for all of our sons Dayton soon to be 4, Landon 2, & Baby Boy Stuart #3 may they all be mighty warriors in the hands of their Savior!
Thank you Los Banos, the bathroom stop, for now being a blessed stop in our journey of life!

What would happen if more of us listened to great preaching rather than the non-sense on the radio (for me sports talk radio)? Would we all be more edified? I’m pretty sure we would!
Thanks to modern technology most of us can take great preaching with us wherever we go through ipods, iphones, ipads, and I am sure all the other non-Apple gadgets I know nothing about (yes that was a plug for Apple:)).
Right now there is some great preaching going on and I would encourage y’all to download some and have a regular listen. Have church in your car every time you drive.

My wife Christina & I are now headed into our third presidential election season. I mention that because this presidential election season has been a complete contrast to the previous two presidential elections we’ve gone through together.
It has been peaceful!
Why?
Not because we are now both members of the same party, to be honest Christina won’t even tell me what party she is registered with, if any. Nor has she confirmed her vote in any of the previous elections. I always want to talk about whom I just voted for & my dear wife sits there silently, not taking any of the bait.
It is not because I no longer pay attention to politics. I still read the news articles and head to Real Clear Politics almost every single day to see the latest polls.
Nor because she is less involved, her involvment has always been zero ’till election time, so you can’t go much less than that.
No, the reason this election season is peaceful is because I’ve repented!
I’ve repented of all the years of my life I put politics ahead of the Gospel!
That is what I believe happens when Pastors, well really all Christians, enter the fray of the political dialogue to such a degree that they are willing to alienate another human being over a political conviction.
I learned this lesson again just recently, when I decided to visit a Chick-fil-a for the first time ever in my life. I went not based on a moral conviction regarding the issue at hand or due to my loyalty to any political party. I went simply because I was irritated with a politician I heard tell people not to frequent the business based on the owners particular point of view.
I posted a picture of my wife returning to our car with the caption “waiting in line for the first and probably last time at a Chick-Fil-a.”
By the time I got home, my Facebook was lit up with comments most supportive, but quite a number in angst over my decision to go to the Chick-Fil-a. My initial reaction was to get defensive and even mad at those that were so bothered…but then I stepped back and I agreed with the people that were mad at me, I was mad at me too!
I was not mad at myself for the same reason most of them were, but I was mad at myself for needlessly entering a battle that was a no-win situation as most battles fought through political means are!
This election season I had done so well at keeping my mouth shut. Not posting any opinions about the candidates. Not even pressing “like” on the political satire constantly being posted on Facebook. Christina had not had to tell me every Sabbath afternoon to stop talking politics (that is why it is peaceful now:)). I have not felt the need to throw under handed digs into my sermons against one party or another. I have not posted video clips of one candidate or another that clearly shows my endorsement, without ever actually endorsing anyone (since that would be illegal for me as a pastor). But now just like that, in just a moments time with one simple picture and post on Facebook, I was back in the thick of it and I had people in support and people in opposition going at it on my Facebook page. This was something I would have loved in years past, but that I now despise!
I despise, because Jesus deserves better than having one of His children putting politics ahead of the Gospel.
And that is exactly what we are doing whenever we choose to have an argument about politics, publically endorse a candidate, put a political placard in our front yard, or slap a bumper sticker onto our car that will alienate one group for the sake of rallying another.
During the 2010 Congressional Elections as I was becoming my usual heated self, ready and willing to have debates with both sides of the aisle and considering myself “oh such a balanced person”, Jesus convicted my heart. He asked me very clearly, “are you willing to sacrifice your ability to witness to someone for the joy of being right about a political candidate.”
My answer is NO!
The Salvation of all mankind Republican, Democrat, Libertarian, Independent, etc. is far more important to me than any position I have.
But when I choose to voicferously express my political views.
When I choose to post political digs on my twitter or facebook accounts against particular parties or individuals.
When I am willing to have an argument or even an intense discussion about politics…
In this politically polarized and politcally caustic society I am essentially choosing to say, “I care more about my views and what I want than being a witness to you.”
Thus, I care more about myself and my way of life than I do your eternal salvation!
I still enjoy & even care very much about what is happening in the political world. It is my hobby–but it is now a personal hobby, between me, myself, & I.
And I repent for the years I put politics ahead of the Gospel. The election of a candidate over the witness of Jesus. Me over you.
It is peaceful in our home this election season because Jesus is the only individual worth publically endorsing!
The Greatest Evangelists of the Ark (our church plant) have been…
So today Albert & I attempted to do the first Faster Pastor vcast. The plan was to have a couple female pastors on there as well and discuss the happenings of yesterday (The Pacific Union Constituency Meeting). Well, no one showed…actually that isn’t true our good friend Kessia showed, but her ipad wouldn’t support the recording functionality of the hang-out, another friend had an internet blow-out just as we were beginning, and then several friends pretended like they didn’t know us, the moment we told them what the topic was. 🙂
Albert and I attempted to do the vcast on our own, but after watching it we decided that it really didn’t add to the conversation or help to edify the current debate or those whom would be listening to our discussion either.
Our goal is to avoid adding to the noise needlessly!
So there will be no Faster Pastor today!
